In a time when many NFL teams are clamming up and not signing players, the New England Patriots on Monday signed someone. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Patriots agreed to terms on a two-year contract with DT Marcus Stroud.
Marcus Stroud, New England Patriots Agree On Two-Year Contract
Stroud's best days are behind him at this point but the Patriots are known for getting the most out of veterans like him. He was the Jacksonville Jaguars first round pick in 2001 before he was traded to the Buffalo Bills before the 2008 season. In 2009, he signed a contract extension with the Buffalo only to see the Bills release him on February 16th of this year.
Signing him now is an interesting move for the Patriots. At midnight on March 3rd, the CBA between the NFL owners and players will expire meaning there can be no more player movement. So, the Pats had until then to sign Stroud but he won’t be working with the Patriots players and coaches until a new agreement is signed.
If a lockout or work stoppage goes late into the summer, it could be months until Stroud gets a playbook and works with the coaching staff. Because of that timing, many teams are shying away from signing players.
