New York Knicks forward-center Amar'e Stoudemire will be suspended for one game unless the NBA rescinds a technical foul called in Thursday's loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Should the call stand, Stoudemire would have 16 on the season. Beginning with a player's 16th technical foul in a season, the NBA assesses a one-game suspension for every additional two techs.
Amar’e Stoudemire Faces Suspension After 16th Technical Foul In Knicks’ Loss
Dwight Howard was suspended for the Orlando Magic's Monday game due to earning 16 techs. The Magic lost that game to the Portland Trail Blazers 89-85. Stoudemire was assessed a technical in the second quarter on Thursday after a minor joust with Mavericks center Brendan Haywood.
Haywood was also given a technical; the double-technical foul referees sometimes use to assert control over a chippy game has been reviled by some fans for years, but it’s taken on increased importance this season as officials crack down on player complaints.
It cropped up a few weeks ago when Kings center DeMarcus Cousins was assessed a technical for complaining, and 10 minutes later was hit with a double-technical after jostling with an opponent trying to rebound a missed free throw. The call ruled Cousins out of the final minute of a tight game, and the Kings lost. The NBA later rescinded the second technical on Cousins, but that didn't solve the problem of losing the team's best player in crunch time.
