According to Fox Sports’ Jeff Goodman, Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich has informed Paul Hewitt that the University will not renew his contract. This news comes shortly after Tech completed a disappointing season going just 13-18 and losing in the first round of the ACC Tournament to Virginia Tech. In that game, the Yellow Jackets scored just 43 points which was the lowest total of the Paul Hewitt era.
Paul Hewitt Fired As Georgia Tech Head Coach
Hewitt finishes his career at Georgia Tech with an overall record of 190-162 overall and just 72-104 in ACC play. Hewitt’s highpoint at Tech was the run to the national championship game in 2004.
The decision to fire Hewitt wasn’t an easy one considering the financial ramifications of the decision. After going to the championship game in 04, then Tech AD Dave Braine game Hewitt a raise and extension. The contract was essentially endless, a six-year deal that automatically had an additional year added to it on April 15 of every year. To fire Hewitt will cost Tech approximately $7.2 million over the next two years.
