2011 NFL Draft Needs: New Orleans Saints

The 2010 Super Bowl Champions took a step back this past season and were upset in the first round of the playoffs by the Seattle Seahawks. The New Orleans Saints finished with an 11-6 record that was fueled by inconsistency on both sides of the ball. With defensive guru Gregg Williams electing to stay with the team, New Orleans will dedicate a lot of its offseason to improving its defense.

In their six losses, the Saints allowed more than 20 points in each of them and more than 30 points in four of them. Sedrick Ellis and Will Smith are key pieces along the defensive line but New Orleans needs to add some more depth in this area. Signing Shaun Rogers improves the depth, but adding another tackle or end is important. With both Danny Clark and Scott Shanle set to become free agents (If CBA is resolved), outside linebacker is also a priority that needs to be addressed.

1. Defensive tackle: Ellis finally stayed healthy for an entire season in 2010-11 and it paid dividends for the defense. With his history of injuries and the lack of depth along the defensive line look for New Orleans to address this need early in the draft. Some possible fits for the Saints include: Stephen Paea (set the bench press record at the combine), Corey Liuget and Drake Nevis.

2. Outside linebacker: New Orleans might look at upgrading both outside linebacker spots with both Shanle and Clark’s futures with the team up in the air. Some linebackers to keep an eye should include: Bruce Carter and Mason Foster, who should both be available in round two. New Orleans could use its first round pick on someone like Justin Houston, who would provide the defense with a legitimate pass rushing threat.

3. Running back: This might not be the Saints most important need, but stability at the position is a must. With Thomas re-signing, adding a back to compliment him will make a dangerous offense that much better. Mikel Leshoure would be a good fit on the team, but New Orleans won’t take a back that early. Some mid-round guys that Saints could draft include: Daniel Thomas, DeMarco Murray and Shane Vereen.
