MLS has suspended FC Dallas defender Jair Benitez for one game and fined him $500 for what was widely reported as his spitting at Houston Dynamo forward Brian Ching during the teams' preseason game on Feb. 13. Benitez had initially been suspended two games, but the players' union appealed the decision and MLS Commissioner Don Garber reduced it to one game.

In a separate incident, Real Salt Lake defender Jamison Olave was fined $250 for critical comments he made on Twitter regarding officials after a preseason game with Sporting Kanas City on March 8. That game ended early when RSL coach Jason Kreis pulled his players off the field following a bench-clearing brawl.
I am very very angry tonight. The referee was terrible.
