Gillette Stadium is going to be hosting some high-profile friendlies this summer if a report in the Boston Globe is to be believed. Not only will Spain reportedly be playing the United States national team in early June before the Gold Cup, but Manchester United is also rumored to be playing the New England Revolution on July 14.
Spain Reportedly Getting Ready To Play USMNT At Gillette Stadium
The U.S. last played Spain in 2009 at the Confederations Cup. In that match, the U.S. beat then No. 1 ranked Spain 2-0 behind goals from Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey and six saves from Tim Howard. Spain ultimately recovered from that setback and won the 2010 World Cup, their first in the country's illustrious history. The Furia Roja feature some of the world's greatest players, including Xavi, Cesc Fabregas and David Villa.
Manchester United, which has been rumored to already have scheduled matches with the Seattle Sounders, Chicago Fire and the MLS All-Stars, brings their own impressive star power. Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Javier Hernandez are just some of the big names currently on their roster.
Although Gillette Stadium has a turf field, the Globe is also reporting that a grass surface would be brought in for those matches.
