The MLS's Reserve League will return this weekend when DC United host the Columbus Crew prior to the two teams' game later Saturday evening. That will be the first of a schedule that will see all 18 teams play 10 Reserve League games against one another. The league's return was made possible when rosters were expanded from 24 to 30 players this season.
MLS Announces 10-Game Reserve League Schedules
The league previously existed from 2005-08, but it wasn't deemed cost effective and was ultimately shelved. Among the players who have previously played in the Reserve League are Chris Wondolowski, Omar Cummings, Jeff Larentowicz and Kosuke Kimura.
The new league will be split into three divisions, East, West and Central, with each team playing the others in their division twice. Teams are also free to schedule reserve games against non-MLS teams. Among the players that are eligible to compete, are anyone on the 30-man roster. Members of the teams’ academies, as well as trialists will be allowed to play in a limited number of games before they must be offered contracts. Games will be played during the week or prior to senior-team games.
