On Saturday morning, San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson underwent an MRI, and the team learned that he had sustained an injury to his left oblique muscle. From the Chronicle's Hank Schulman:
Brian Wilson Injures Oblique Muscle, May Miss Opening Day
[Giants manager Bruce] Bochy tried to be reassuring, saying, “Nothing is torn or anything,” but even he had to concede concern. Obliques are tricky injuries that usually sideline pitchers for about a month.
Wilson, arguably the figure most emblematic of the 2010 World Series-winning Giants, received Cy Young and even MVP consideration last season when he recorded 48 saves with a 1.81 ERA. Schulman quoted Bochy on a few players who may step into the closer’s role in Wilson’s absence:
Bochy mentioned Javier Lopez, Jeremy Affeldt and Sergio Romo as potential closers if Wilson misses any of the regular season.
The Giants open their season against the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 31st.
