The Carolina Panthers hold the top pick in the 2011 NFL draft and they're considering 5-7 players according to reports. At the NFL Combine in February head coach Ron Rivera said something similar that the team was looking at multiple players.
2011 NFL Draft: Panthers Considering Several QBs Including Blaine Gabbert, Cam Newton
"That group hasn't changed,'' GM Marty Hurney said. "We're keeping our options. You never know what might happen in the meantime. As we get closer, day to day and week to week, you always have an order in your mind. That order can change.''
We know defensive line will be an area they'll look at but also included will be quarterback. The obvious ones are QB Blaine Gabbert and QB Cam Newton. The third one is a bit of a surprise -- QB Ryan Mallett. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Panthers gave each of those players a portion of their playbook so that they can quiz them on it when they visit Carolina.
Also on the list will be WR A.J. Green and CB Patrick Peterson.
"The most important thing is selecting the right player. If you find the right player, everything else is going to take care of itself. You should get a good player with the first pick. But you've got to find the player who is going to give you the most impact on your football team and in your organization."
If they’re looking for “most impact’ that has to be quarterback but more than likely we’re reading too much into that.
The Panthers are on the clock and they’ll have to make their decision by the evening of April 28th.
