Qatar is too hot in summer to host a World Cup, you say? Not a problem. The clever chaps at the mechanical and industrial engineering department at Qatar University have designed giant artificial clouds, which will float high over the stadiums and provide shade to the players and fans. These clouds will be made of a special carbon structure skin and are to be helium-inflated with four engines to ensure these things are where they need to be. They are, of course, solar powered.
2022 World Cup: Qatar University Designs ‘Artificial Cloud’ To Battle Summer Heat
If that sounds awfully like they’ve invented the world’s lightest and biggest blimp, it’s because they have. While most of the UK media is describing them as costing almost half of a million pounds to produce each, that appears to be the cost for the prototype only. If they do indeed go ahead with full production of the Death Star mega-blimps artificial clouds that price is expected to drop considerably.
You can’t say Qatar aren’t thinking outside the box here.
