There are a scant few quality college baseball programs in cold weather places, but Virginia has become one of them, making national headlines with a trip to the College World Series and now with a perfect game in the history books. Junior Will Roberts tossed a perfect game on Tuesday afternoon against George Washington to lead the Cavaliers to a 2-0 victory over the Colonials and become the first pitcher in school history to sit down all 27 batters he faced and the first to do it anywhere in the country since 2002.
Virginia’s Will Roberts Throws First Perfect Game In Program History
Roberts struck out 10 Colonials in the contest and finished the game off in style with a pair of punch outs and a simple ground out to finish off the piece of history. The tall, lanky right-hander has been sensational all season for the Cavaliers, racking up a 5-0 record now to go along with a 1.13 ERA.
Now he has a piece of history to add to what is shaping up to be a memorable season for Roberts and the second-ranked Cavaliers. With a sweep over Clemson and a series win against Florida St. already in the books, Virginia has emerged as the top team in the ACC. Much of their success is due to their outstanding pitching, which in addition to a scintillating and now historic Roberts, also includes a likely first round pick in June’s MLB Draft, Danny Hultzen.
