A hooking penalty with four seconds left in the third period very well may have been the difference between victory and defeat for the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night. Henrik Zetterberg, who had tied the game at 2-2 for the Detroit Red Wings just minutes earlier, went to the box right at the end of regulation.
Blackhawks Vs. Red Wings: Henrik Zetterberg’s Penalty Allows Marian Hossa’s OT Winner
Then, just 51 seconds into the overtime period, Marian Hossa blasted a shot right through the wickets of Joey MacDonald to earn his club two points that might just keep their season alive when all is said and done.
The win puts a three points gap between eighth-place Chicago and ninth-place Calgary, as well as a four-point gap between them and 10th-place Dallas. With a game in hand over Anaheim and Nashville, the Blackhawks also put themselves in a position to jump over or tie those clubs, perhaps moving up to sixth place or even fifth, should the Los Angeles Kings falter down the line here.
For the Red Wings, they inch closer to a playoff berth with the single point effort, but their hold on second-place in the West is loosening, just one point ahead of third-place San Jose.
