Jason Bay Has Rib Injury, May Require DL Stint

Trying to rebound from a disappointing 2010 campaign, Jason Bay's 2011 has gotten off to a bad start, as the veteran Mets outfielder has suffered a rib injury that may cause him to begin the season on the disabled list.

According to Adam Rubin, Bay was scratched from a scheduled Tuesday start with a strained intercostal muscle, which is a muscle in between the ribs. There’s no word yet on the severity and Bay is currently undergoing more tests, but these have a habit of being nagging injuries that can push a player out of action for up to a month. The Mets will hope that Bay’s strain is only minor and that he’ll be able to play within a few days, but landing on the DL is a real possibility.

If Bay does have to visit the DL, it's expected that Scott Hairston and Willie Harris will team up to man his position. The 32-year-old had his 2010 season cut off by a concussion, finishing with a .259 average and six home runs over 95 games.
