Our annual 2011 NFL Mock Draft, with picks made by each of SB Nation’s NFL team bloggers, is in full swing. The latest pick in to the podium: the Washington Redskins, at No. 10 overall.
2011 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 10
With the 10th overall pick in the 2011 SB Nation NFL Writers Mock Draft, the Washington Redskins select Robert Quinn, defensive end, North Carolina.
Kevin Ewoldt of HogsHaven.com explains the choice, and our own Dan Kadar reacts to it, after the jump. Make sure you’re grading this pick for the Redskins, and checking out Hogs Haven for all of your Redskins needs.
Kevin Ewoldt explains: The Redskins only had one player who had more than 2.5 sacks in 2010 - Brian Orakpo. Robert Quinn would seem to be able to change that. He would look great as the pass rusher opposite Orakpo, and would significantly upgrade the 3-4 linebacking corps. If he had played at UNC in 2010, there is no way he would even be available here. We’re still shocked he is.
In regards to his “personality concerns,” I can squash those. One of my friends coached at UNC and personally knows Quinn. He said he’s one of the best kids he’s known, and the mistake he made does not at all reflect who he is. His battle with a tumor reflected that, which I covered.
Dan Kadar reacts: Character is not what should be questioned in Quinn. What should be is whether or not he’d be able to transition to playing linebacker. At North Carolina, Quinn was almost always used moving forward from the defensive end spot. He’ll also go to a team being extremely rusty after sitting out the 2010 season.
Quinn carries an extreme amount of risk. But with the 10th pick, he would have some value here. [Robert Quinn Scouting Report]
With that, the Houston Texans - and our friends at Battle Red Blog - are now on the clock.
