Fredy Montero apparently picked up a wrist injury during the week and will have surgery, according to a Tweet from Seattle Times beat writer Joshua Mayers. The Seattle Sounders Designated Player is still being called questionable for Saturday's game against the San Jose Earthquakes.
Fredy Montero Will Have Wrist Surgery, Questionable For Saturday’s Seattle Sounders Game
Montero has played well this year, but is still riding a 13-match goalless streak that stretches back to last season. The last time he scored in a MLS game was Aug. 28, 2010, when he scored two goals against the Chicago Fire. At the time, Montero seemed like a front-runner for the MVP award.
This year, he's fired off a MLS-leading 14 shots, nine of them on target. But a combination of bad luck and quality saves have kept him off the ledger. His performance has been rather indicative of the Sounders' play as a team, as they've taken a league-leading 47 shots, but have scored just one goal. It's not immediately clear who would start in Montero's place, but Nate Jaqua has recently returned from an injury and could prove an intriguing pairing with O'Brian White.
