The last time someone other than Jimmie Johnson or Denny Hamlin won a race at Martinsville Speedway, people were still using MySpace, Talladega Nights hadn’t been released in theaters yet and no one had ever heard of Lady Gaga.
Hot Dog! NASCAR Short-Track Racing, Live From Martinsville Speedway
In other words, it was a long time ago. Five years ago, actually.
Tony Stewart won the April 2, 2006 race at the paperclip-shaped short-track in Virginia. Since then, the list winners at Martinsville:
- Jimmie Johnson
- Jimmie Johnson
- Jimmie Johnson
- Denny Hamlin
- Jimmie Johnson
- Jimmie Johnson
- Denny Hamlin
- Denny Hamlin
- Denny Hamlin
You get the picture. It’s the Johnson and Hamlin Show at Martinsville, and lately it’s been all Hamlin. Even on a bum knee that required surgery the next day, Hamlin had a miracle comeback on a late restart one year ago and began a surge toward the championship hunt.
He needs another one this year. Sitting 21st in points and seemingly with no momentum, Hamlin is looking to Martinsville for a boost. And if something goes wrong?
Well, the “11 in 11” fans don’t want to think about that just yet.
