Rumors have been swirling around for awhile now that FC Dallas was close to signing U-20 Colombian forward Fabian Castillo. Now, Big D Soccer, SB Nation’s FC Dallas blog, is reporting that the deal has been finalized. The deal reportedly involves FC Dallas paying $700,000 for half of Castillo’s rights.
FC Dallas, Fabian Castillo Reportedly Finalize Deal
Big D Soccer has been following the story for more than a week, and previously detailed some of thinking that would lead the Toros to signing a relatively unknown and untested player to such a significant contract. FC Dallas has not signed a player to a Designated Player contract since Denilson in 2007.
Perhaps some of the thinking behind bringing in Castillo is not passing up a player of his caliber and potential when offered the chance to sign him at a reasonable price. Those of you who play Football Manager know just how hard it is to get the type of player that big European clubs are looking at and signing Castillo is a unique chance to prove to South American clubs that your team is a legitimate place to move from your home country and raise your transfer fee before moving on to Europe.
How Castillo would fit into FCD coach Schellas Hyndman’s system is still a bit of an open question. Previously, the Toros had been basically using a lone striker, but appear to be moving toward a more standard 4-4-2. Castillo could, theoretically fit next to either veteran Milton Rodriguez or Home Grown Player Ruben Luna.
