According to several reports from Germany and a release on FIFA.com, Bayern Munich will part ways by mutual agreement with legendary coach Louis van Gaal at the conclusion of the season. Although van Gaal’s contract has more than 15 months left to run, it’s understood that Bayern’s board is unhappy at a season that 25 weeks in sees the side 5th in the Bundesliga and 19 points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund. For the most successful side in German footballing history, that’s nothing short of unacceptable. Van Gaal seems to have been living on borrowed time for the past few weeks, his reputation as something of a managerial god keeping him in his position when lesser mortals would face the boot immediately.
Louis Van Gaal To Leave Bayern Munich In Summer
It was a 3-1 away defeat to Hannover on Saturday that led the club to claim that a “difference in opinion about the strategic direction of the club” would result in van Gaal’s release at the end of the season - Bayern’s failure to leapfrog Hannover to get to third in the table came in the same week as a crushing 3-1 home loss to leaders Dortmund and a semifinal loss to Schalke 04 in the DFB-Pokal Cup - again at the Allianz Arena. It’s been a hard, fast fall for Bayern, who just last season won the league and cup double as well as reaching the finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were defeated by Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan.
Bayern will presumably attempt to secure a replacement for van Gaal before the season is out.
