Ray Drew, the nation’s top-ranked defensive end prospect in the 2011 signing class and just one of an array of jewels in Mark Richt’s latest recruiting haul, may have put Georgia in a spot of bother with his much-ballyhooed commitment announcement -- to the tune of five NCAA violations charged to the Bulldogs. Drew’s announcement, which tickled us to no end in part because he had promised to “shock the world” and then picked the team that had been the frontrunner all along and everyone got real sulky, featured speaking appearances by Dawg luminaries David Pollack and Randall Godfrey, which turns out to be a no-no:
Georgia Reports Five Recruiting Violations From Ray Drew Signing
UGA compliance director Eric Baumgartner determined the following NCAA bylaws were broken:
- 13.1.2.1 — General Rule (regarding unauthorized off-campus recruitment)
- 13.1.2.2 (g) — General Exceptions/Unavoidable Incidental Contact
- 13.1.2.4 (d) — Restrictions, Athletics Representatives/Visiting Prospective Student-Athlete’s Institution
- 13.1.2.5 — Off-Campus Contacts or Evaluations
- 13.10.2 — Comments Before Signing
Super neighborly of Mark Richt to stand up for fellow e’er-do-well Jim Tressel by taking the heat off the Buckeyes for an afternoon, no?
