Details are still a bit murky, but the long-rumored signing of Rajko Lekic by the New England Revolution appears to have been finalized. Lekic is currently playing for Danish side Silkeborg IF and has one cap with the Denmark national team. The Bent Musket, SB Nation's New England Revolution blog, has been closely following the story for several week and had this to say about the possibility of bringing Lekic on board:
Danish Striker Rajko Lekic Signs With New England Revolution, Report Says
We’ve all heard the mantra from the organization this season: signing a DP is a major priority. However, I don’t think I’ll be alone in calling it a total cop-out if the Revs sign Lekic that way and then try to hold him up as a major coup. When most New England fans imagine a designated player in Revolution blue, they’re expecting a player whose playing level is of a caliber that is deserving of $400,000+ every year in salary, not a player who gets the tag slapped on him as a technicality.
While Lekic does not carry the kind of name-brand recognition many Revs fans were probably hoping for, he does have a reasonably impressive resume and very much fits the mold of someone like Eric Hassli, who was recently signed to a DP contract by the Vancouver Whitecaps. The 29-year-old has scored 84 goals since the 2003 season, including 39 in his last 72 matches with Silkeborg.
