It took them 11 innings, but on Friday night, the Arizona Diamondbacks topped the Colorado Rockies, 7-6, to win their season opener. Matt Lindstrom’s wild pitch in the top of the 11th gave Gerardo Parra a chance to scoot home for the go-ahead run.
Diamondbacks Vs. Rockies: Arizona’s Bullpen Comes Through In Extra-Innings Win
The Rockies, down by three runs at one point, rallied in front of their announced home crowd of 49,374 to send the game to extras. Parra singled to lead off the 11th, then eventually moved to third on a Willie Bloomquist single. Lindstrom struggled with his control throughout the inning, committing the wild pitch before striking out the next two batters to end the inning.
Ubaldo Jimenez had a tough debut. On the heels of a breakout 2010 campaign that earned him Cy Young Award consideration for a time, Jimenez gave up six runs, five of them earned, in six innings. Both bullpens did a remarkable job, however, giving up only one run in ten innings of relief work.
