What initially had folks wondering whether an elaborate April Fool’s joke was being played is now reality: UNLV head coach Lon Kruger has accepted the same position at Oklahoma. Kruger was reportedly offered the Oklahoma coaching job on Friday, and confirmed he’d accepted it late Friday evening after meeting with his players.
Lon Kruger Hired As Oklahoma Basketball Head Coach, According To Report
According to reports, Kruger is set to sign a seven-year contract worth $2.2 million annually, a significant increase over the $1.1 million a year he made at UNLV. Kruger said the money played a role in the decision, but he also felt it was time to tackle a new challenge after spending seven years in Las Vegas.
“I would be lying if I didn’t say money was a consideration. But it was not only money. It was the challenge and the opportunity. It was very enticing. I’ve never planned to leave any job”
Oklahoma has been searching for a head coach since firing Jeff Caple on March 14 following a second-straight losing season. There’s been no word on who UNLV will look for to replace Kruger or when he’ll be introduced officially at Oklahoma.
