Starting shortstop Erick Aybar hasn't been in the Angels' lineup since Saturday, April 2, as he's been dealing with tightness in his side that turned out to be a mild oblique strain. Neither Aybar nor the Angels thought very much of the issue, but an MRI revealed the nature of the injury, and on Sunday, the Angels decided to place Aybar on the disabled list.
Erick Aybar On DL With Oblique Strain
The DL stint is retroactive to April 4, so Aybar will be eligible to return on April 19. Aybar is already running and taking groundballs, so he’s clearly not hampered very much, but the Angels are just playing it safe for the time being as they don’t want to push somebody who doesn’t need to be pushed.
Until Aybar comes back, Maicer Izturis will hold the fort at shortstop. Izturis has batted 13-36 on the young season with three doubles and a homer. Aybar had been 5-12 with three doubles before getting hurt.
