The Boston Red Sox, as you're all aware, are off to a miserable 1-7 start this season. A part of that has been Clay Buchholz, who's allowed nine runs and five homers over ten innings in two starts. But mutual struggles aside, there's some brighter news on this Sunday afternoon, as Buchholz and the Red Sox have come together to agree on a four-year contract extension.
Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox Agree To Four-Year Contract Extension
According to Jon Morosi, the deal will be worth about $30 million, and it will buy out all three years of Buchholz’s arbitration eligibility, and the first year of his free agency. There may also be a 2016 team option included here as well.
The Red Sox signed Jon Lester to a five-year, $30 million contract early in his career, and this deal is in the same vein. The 26-year-old Buchholz has thrown nearly 400 innings over his Major League career, posting a 3.77 ERA. He isn't expected to blossom into an ace, but he should be a reliable mid-rotation arm for many years, and that's what the Red Sox are counting on.
