2011 NFL Draft: DE/LB Brooks Reed, Arizona
Brooks Reed | Senior defensive end | Arizona | 6’3”, 263 pounds
Defensive scheme and projected NFL position.
Reed will likely slide to the outside linebacker slot in the NFL after playing defensive end during the height of his college career. At the next level, he’s likely not effective enough against bigger offensive linemen, but Reed has shown decent speed thanks to a 4.68 40-yard dash time in the combine, giving him a solid place as a rush linebacker in a 3-4 defense.
A story you may not know
Strength and conditioning is Brooks Reed’s forte.
A local boy out of Sabino High School in Tucson, the then 216-pound Reed was brought into Arizona Wildcat coach Mike Stoops’ program as a fullback. In a few years, the three-star prospect would be a good mover in former offensive coordinator Mike Canales’ pro-style offense, coaches thought.
After redshirting his first year in Tucson and just as Stoops replaced Canales with Sonny Dykes and his dubbed Air-Zona offense,Reed’s work in the weight room began to show, his emblematic flowing blond locks seemingly growing as did his muscle-mass.
He switched to defensive end, and after spot duty his sophomore year, Reed became one of the leaders of Arizona’s strongest position, which includes NFL DE prospects Ricky Elmore and D’Aundre Reed.
And despite an injury-riddled junior year, Reed started and played all 13 games of Arizona’s 2010 season, recording 47 tackles and 6.5 sacks, before a solid performance at the recent NFL combine.
All thanks to a little work in the weight room.
