San Diego Basketball’s Brandon Johnson, Thaddeus Brown Indicted In Point-Fixing Scheme

Former San Diego Toreros assistant coach Thaddeus Brown and players Brandon Johnson and Brandon Dowry, plus seven others, have been indicted on charges of fixing college basketball games, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Monday. That’s the University of San Diego, mind you, not San Diego State, as there’s been some confusion on that distinction.

Johnson is the school’s all-time leader in points and assists. According to the allegations, he and his co-conspirators worked to affect the outcome of an unspecified February 2010 game, while Dowry and Brown attempted to recruit a player for the purposes of fixing a game against UC-Riverside. It’s also alleged that Johnson, in 2011 while playing in the NBA D-League, tried to get a current San Diego player to join the cause.

The indictment sprouted from what was originally an investigation into San Diego marijuana distribution. The 10 indictees were charged with conspiracy to distribute marijuana in addition to the sports bribery charges.
