Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal broke his left thumb while sliding into third base on Monday night, an injury that could take up to four to six weeks to heal. That is, if he even wants to come back. From Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times:
Rafael Furcal Breaks Left Thumb In Dodgers Win, Could Be Contemplating Retirement
Furcal has a broken finger. Said he’s pondering retirement.Sometimes a player will say strange things after receiving devastating news -- usually it’s just blowing off steam -- but it’s still pretty rare for a player to mutter the “R-word” openly, when he’s only 33 and still productive. Furcal has struggled with injuries throughout his career, missing large chunks of both 2008 and 2010, and was already having lingering problems with his wrist this season.
With third baseman Casey Blake recently returning from the disabled list, the Dodgers have a couple of shortstop options, with both Jamey Carroll and Juan Uribe having experience at the position.
