For the second straight game, the Detroit Tigers walked off with a victory against the Texas Rangers. For the second straight game, the Rangers’ best reliever watched from the bullpen as it happened. On Wednesday, the Tigers cooled down the Rangers again, defeating Texas 3-2 on a ninth-inning home run from Brandon Inge.
Rangers Vs. Tigers: Detroit, Brandon Inge Walk Off For Second Straight Game
Max Scherzer threw six strong innings for Detroit, striking out seven and walking two. Texas got to him in the sixth, though, with RBI singles from Nelson Cruz and David Murphy giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead. Victor Martinez and Brennan Boesch answered quickly for the Tigers in the bottom half of the inning, hitting back-to-back doubles that were followed by a sacrifice fly from Inge.
Emergency starter Dave Bush threw three shutout innings for the Rangers in place of Colby Lewis, who did not make the road trip in anticipation of the birth of his second child. Bush was followed by Mason Tobin, who threw two scoreless innings, and Mark Lowe, who gave up two earned runs. At no point, though, did Neftali Feliz make an appearance, much to the consternation of Rangers fans. Instead, the ninth inning was pitched by Darren Oliver, who gave up the fateful home run to Inge, a towering blast that went into the left field bleachers to give the Tigers the rubber match of the series.
The Tigers will face the Oakland Athletics on Friday following an off day, with Rick Porcello scheduled to pitch. The Rangers will try to right the ship against the New York Yankees on Friday, sending Matt Harrison to the mound.
