Holger Stanislawski To Leave St. Pauli At Season’s End

Today it was announced that manager Holger Stanislawski will be leaving FC St. Pauli at the end of the season. According to the official Bundesliga website, he stated that “We’ve had an incredibly intense last few years and my batteries just aren’t recharging any more. We need a change now, someone fresh needs to come in.”

Holger has been a stalwart at the club since the 1993-1994 season when he made his debut for the club in defense. He would remain at the club as a player until the end of the 2003-2004 season, when he would head into the coaching ranks at St. Pauli.

In his time as manager, St. Pauli has risen through the league divisions in Germany. When he took over the club, they were playing in the Regionalliga Nord (Regional League North) which was the third division at the time. In his brief time as manager, the club won promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2007. After finishing 9th in 2007-2008 and 8th in 2008-2009, St. Pauli would earn automatic promotion to the Bundesliga after the 2009-2010 season.

Currently the club is second to bottom on a measly 28 points with a mere 3 points pulling them out of the danger zone. However, the form table shows a different story. Over the last 5 matches St. Pauli sit dead last with 0 points while scoring only 3 goals and surrendering 13. Staving off one of the three relegation positions will be difficult for the club, but it is possible with 5 matches left. There is no doubt that Holger Stanislawski would love to leave the club kicking the ball around in the Bundesliga next season.

Sporting Director Helmut Schulte stated today that club would be retiring the number 21 shirt in honor of Stanislawski. This is the number he wore while playing for the club.

Before the news of Stanislawki’s departure from St. Pauli was announced, rumors began swirling that he was being lined up by Hoffenheim Chairman Dietmar Hopp to take over in the summer. It was announced earlier this week that Hoffenheim would not be exercising the one year option that Marco Pezzaiuoli has for next season after taking over in January from Ralph Rangnick.
