The New York Mets were within ten feet of magic in the first game of a Thursday doubleheader at Citi Field, but they came up just short as the Colorado Rockies survived a ninth-inning surge and defeated the Mets, 6-5.
Rockies Vs. Mets: Colorado Takes First Game Of Doubleheader Against New York
The Mets took an early lead, with David Wright hitting a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, and Scott Hairston singling home a run in the fifth. But R.A. Dickey, who opened with four shutout innings for New York, gave up a run in the fifth, then two runs in the sixth after Jose Morales hit a two-run double on a ball that Hairston misjudged in right field.
The Rockies chased Dickey in the seventh after Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run home run. Bobby Parnell didn’t fare much better, allowing a solo home run to Troy Tulowitzki, giving the Rockies a 6-2 lead. Tulowitzki continued his torrid hitting against the Mets, going 3 for 4 in the game.
Greg Reynolds, called up to fill in after Ubaldo Jimenez was placed on the disabled list, pitched well, allowing two earned runs in five innings of work.
Huston Street had a shaky ninth inning, and he was pulled before he could complete the save opportunity, allowing a two-run home run to Hairston that was followed by two consecutive singles to Josh Thole and Carlos Beltran. Matt Lindstrom came in to protect a 6-5 lead, getting Jose Reyes to ground out before walking Daniel Murphy to load the bases for David Wright. The Mets’ third baseman took the count to 3-2 before lifting a fly ball to the right-field warning track to end the game.
The Mets will try to avoid the four-game sweep in the second game of today’s doubleheader, with Chris Capuano going for New York and Jorge De La Rosa going for Colorado.
