Phil Jackson and the Los Angeles Lakers have each been fined $75,000 by the NBA for the coach's comment that the possibility of a lockout next year helped encourage him to retire as soon as this season is over. The fine was reported for several hours before being announced Thursday.
Phil Jackson, Lakers Fined $75,000 Each For NBA Lockout Comments
The comments that got Jackson and the team into trouble:
It was really about the fact that there’s going to be a lockout. It’s the perfect time to help the organization cover a gap if there’s a lockout ... How long is it going to last? I think there are some people who are pretty convinced there’s not going to be a year next year.
Heavy stuff, coach! Jackson becomes the second Lakers individual to be heavily fined in as many days, as Kobe Bryant was hit for $100,000 Wednesday.
