Blackburn Defender Ryan Nelsen To Miss Remainder Of Season

Blackburn Rovers were dealt a blow in their bid to avoid relegation when it was revealed that Ryan Nelsen would miss the remainder of the season after have surgery to clean out loose debris from his knee. Nelsen initially hurt his knee in January, but he has managed to play through the pain. That was until Saturday when he had to come off in Blackburn's draw with Birmingham City.

“If the surgeon had gone in and looked at his knee in January he’d have probably done the same operation,” Blackburn manager Steve Kean said in a statement to the club’s website. “So with good medical back-up we’ve managed to get him on the pitch more times than we thought we would have got. The prognosis is that he’ll be back some time in August, he just has to rest up for a month and do the rehab from there.”

Blackburn are just three points clear of West Ham and Wolves, who occupy two of the relegation spots. Rovers do get a bit of good news to go along with Nelsen's surgery though with Phil Jones healthy and ready to step back into the center of the defense.

“Fortunately for us we lose Ryan at a time when Phil Jones is back fully fit,” said Kean. “He’s slotted back in there and looked like he’d never been away from central defence so that is fantastic for us, but it is unfortunate that we lose Nelly.”
