Nigeria International Olubayo Adefemi Dies In Car Accident

Nigerian international defender Olubayo Adefemi has been killed in a car accident in Greece on Monday, according to police. The 25-year-old, who played for Skoda Xanthi F.C. in the Greek Super League, also had appearances for Hapeol Tel Aviv, Rapid Bucharest, and Bordeaux in a seven year European career. Apparently Adefemi was on his way to finalise wedding plans when he lost control of his car in poor conditions on Egnatia Odos in northern Greece near Kavala, causing his vehicle to overturn. According to Greek police, Adefami was not wearing a seatbelt.

The league released a statement about Adefami’s death shortly after news first broke:

The Super League and the entire Greek football family would like to express its deepest condolences and sympathy for the family of Olubayo Adefemi who died tragically in a car accident.

It’s always easy to forget that footballers are real people as well as athletes playing a game, but this is another tragic reminder about how quickly things can change. Our sympathies go out to Adefemi’s family, teammates, club and fans.
