2011 NFL Draft: DE Cameron Jordan, California

The 2011 NFL draft is right around the corner and SB Nation’s California Golden Blogs has given us the run down on DE Cameron Jordan, who could be a first round pick. Check out California Golden Blogs for more on Jordan.

Defensive end | Senior | California | 6’4”, 283 pounds

Defensive scheme and projected NFL position:

3-4 Defensive End/4-3 Defensive Tackle: Versatile enough to play in either the 3-4 or the 4-3 system. Cal normally plays 3-4 D, but went to four down linemen with a Predator linebacker playing at the LoS in Clancy Pendergast’s system. Playing essentially as a defensive tackle, Jordan is very good at getting inside leverage on big guards and stuffing running backs. His ability to pound the inside was critical to stuffing LaMichael James and shutting down Oregon’s offense in Cal’s near upset of the Ducks.
Would probably thrive as a 4-3 DT, although his experience in the 3-4 would be valuable as a five technique end. He can play anywhere along the line.

A story you may not know about Cameron Jordan:

Here’s the transcript from a Daily Cal interview/live chat with some excerpts:
How has been getting up at the crack of dawn?
“I’ve always been an early riser. This year has made my day. I used to wake up at 6ish anyways and be up playing video games or studying or singing which my roommates didn’t appreciate. But now morning practice is when I have the most energy anyways.”
What team do you want to play for on Sundays?
“I love the vikings. But, that’s because my pops playing for them. Honestly, I just want to keep playing football. But, if I had to choose the team...maybe the chargers? I sort of love California’s weather.”
What do you tell recruits about Cal?
“It’s a great place to be at, academically and socially. There is just so much to do as well as so many beautiful places to hang and chill and study. I always get to show them a bit of everything and I think they enjoy themselves.”
Do you help out with any kids programs in the Bay Area?
“I work with the Sage Program which is an afterschool program for kids at John Muir Elementary.”

Comparable to which NFL player:

Darnell Dockett. Explosive energy, can play off the edge, and very good at getting tackles for loss like Dockett (34 for Jordan in his four season at Cal, 33 in the final three on a much thinner defensive unit). Jordan has also stated that Dockett is the player his style best resembles.
