Remember all the hullabaloo about Giants rookie Brandon Belt? How it would be a crime against humanity if Belt opened the season in the minors, as Buster Posey did a year ago? Well, it looks like he's going down after all. Andrew Baggarly:
Giants’ Brandon Belt Probably Heading To Triple-A
Giants manager Bruce Bochy didn't completely show his cards, but he sure seemed to tip his hand when asked about the possibility of demoting struggling rookie first baseman Brandon Belt.
Bochy said the club must make a decision tomorrow, when Cody Ross is likely to be activated from the disabled list.
Somebody has to go down, and apparently the options are Belt and speedy outfielder Darren Ford, who hardly plays. But the decision is probably academic, because Andres Torres is coming off the DL soon, too. At which point Belt will become utterly extraneous.
In the meantime, Aubrey Huff's been struggling, both at the plate and in right field. With Belt carrying a .200 batting average, the logical move is to send Belt down, shift Huff back to first base, and hand right field to Ross. Belt will get his shot. But it might not be until this summer.
