Justin Smoak Placed On Bereavement List

Seattle Mariners' first baseman Justin Smoak was placed on the bereavement list by the team on Wednesday for personal reasons according to Kirby Arnold of the Herald.

Smoak, acquired from the Texas Rangers in last season's Cliff Lee deal, was one of the only hitters on the Mariners to get off to a quick start, hitting .291 with a .403 on-base percentage in 55 at-bats. To take Smoak's spot on the roster, Seattle recalled Carlos Peguero from AAA Tacoma, where he was hitting .311 with a .380 on-base percentage and two home runs in 50 at-bats. Peguero, an outfielder, spent most of last season in AA.

The Mariners will start Chris Gimenez, usually the backup catcher, at first base for tonight's game against the Detroit Tigers.

There is no word on how much time Smoak will miss. While on the bereavement list, a player is required to miss a minimum of three games. The maximum stay on the list is seven games.
