Cricket World Cup Final 2011, India Vs. Sri Lanka: Malinga Strikes Early, India Steady Ship

After gaining the momentum towards the end of their innings, Sri Lanka had the perfect start when India batted with Lasith Malinga trapping Virender Sehwag second ball for a duck.

Hopes were pinned on Sehwag as India looked to chase down a big looking total and his dismissal silenced the stadium, but provided the opportunity for local hero Sachin Tendulkar to shine. Tendulkar started brightly but that man Malinga struck again, forcing an edge to the keeper that saw India reeling at 31-2.

Much like in Sri Lanka’s innings pace held sway early on as India looked to rebuild their innings and both Gautham Gambhir and Virat Kohli were circumspect initially, but when Sri Lanka opted for the bowling power play to try and continue their early success they took advantage of the fielding restrictions and struck 40 runs from the 5 overs.
