The Columbus Crew did not earn a lot of style points with their 2-0 victory over FC Dallas on Friday, but they picked up three points just the same. The Crew played nearly 60 minutes with a man advantage, were given a penalty, that was nearly saved by Toros goalkeeper Kevin Hartman, and beat a team many expect to compete for the MLS Cup this year. Andres Mendoza and Eddie Gaven scored the Crew's goals.
Major League Soccer, Week 3: Columbus Crew Pick Up First Victory
FC Dallas is now winless through three matches, despite facing three beatable teams. The Brek Shea-as-a-center back experiment is not going particularly well and a defense that last year never gave up two goals in a game that Hartman started and finished has now given up two goals in back-to-back games.
On the plus side, Fabian Castillo continues to tons of potential. He continues to make dangerous runs down both wings and has the kind of speed coaches drool over. Like his FC Dallas teammates, though, that potential has yet to result in any production.
