Larry Finch Passes Away; Memphis Player-Turned-Coach Was 60
I have confirmed that former Memphis player and coach Larry Finch has died.
Finch played for the Memphis Tigers, where he was a two-time All-American and, alongside Larry Kenon, led Memphis to the Final Four. His most memorable performance as a player came in the 1973 championship game, when he scored 29 points in a losing effort to Bill Walton and UCLA.
Finch remained in Memphis during most of his pro career after signing with the ABA’s Memphis Tams. In the 1980’s, he returned to the Memphis Tigers as an assistant coach, and assumed the reins as head coach during the 1986-87 season. During his 11-year career as head coach, Finch would coach future NBA stars such as Anfernee Hardaway. He led the Tigers to the 1992 Elite Eight as well as the 1995 Sweet 16.
Finch retired as coach in 1997. He had faced health problems since suffering multiple strokes in 2001.
