Five starts, five wins. Not everything has gone perfectly for the Los Angeles Angels, but everything's gone just about perfectly for Angels ace Jered Weaver, as he pitched his team to a 4-1 win over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night that gave the Angels sole possession of first place in the AL West.
Angels Vs. Rangers: Jered Weaver Brilliant As Los Angeles Claims First Place
Matt Harrison was able to trade zeroes with Weaver for a little while, but the Angels broke through for the game's first run in the top of the fourth, when Howie Kendrick knocked his sixth home run of the young season. The Angels would get another in the fifth when a Harrison error allowed Jeff Mathis to score from third, which was all the run support Weaver would need. It wouldn't be all he'd get, but it would be all he'd need.
Weaver was outstanding, going the distance and striking out eight while allowing six hits and zero walks. The Rangers scored in the sixth on a double by Michael Young, but otherwise Weaver was in complete control, improving his season K/BB to 39/9 and lowering his ERA to 1.23. Weaver's won five games already, after winning just 13 times last season.
The Angels would add insurance runs on an RBI single by Maicer Izturis and Vernon Wells' first home run of the season. While the Angels managed only five hits all night, two of them left the yard and they also drew six walks.
