By now, you are surely aware of the injury Seattle Sounders midfielder Steve Zakuani suffered at the hands of a reckless and seemingly cynical Brian Mullan tackle during Friday's game. What has followed, though, is nothing short of an outpouring of support for a player generally considered to be one of the league's emerging superstars.
Steve Zakuani’s Injury On The Minds Of Many Around MLS
Current and former players, announcers, coaches and fans, lots and lots of fans, expressed a mix of anger, horror and well wishes for one of the league’s good guys. Zakuani, who at just 23 years old has already founded a nonprofit aimed at helping at-risk youths, is suddenly looking at an uncertain future.
Sounders announcer Arlo White may have summed up the entire situation best:
Bittersweet night. @stevezakuani11 has broken tib &fib, surgery tonight. 3 pts on road for 1st time. I feel sick tonight, one man's idiocy..
While injuries happen all the time, the combination of circumstances surrounding this one seem to have made Zakuani’s injury seem different. Showing a level of class that is all too often lacking, even the Sounders’ biggest rivals wished a speedy recovery:
Best wishes and a speedy return to the pitch for @stevezakuani11 from the Timbers Army. #realtalk #rctid #sounders
Perhaps realizing that every player is in danger of suffering this kind of injury, numerous players have made sure to send their condolences:
@stevezakuani11 Get better buddy, we're all thinking about you
Moving forward, some Sounders fans are now trying to organize a tribute to Zakuani at next Saturday's home game against Toronto FC.
Dear @DrewFromTV, can we get #11 cards for the home fans next Saturday to show our support for Zakuani? Just like you did for Davies. Thanks
