Rangers Extend Head Coach John Totorella’s Contract, According To Report

The New York Rangers have reportedly extended head coach John Tortorella's contract, one day after his club was eliminated in the first round by the Washington Capitals.

According to the New York Post, the extension should keep Tortorella at the helm for the next three years. Also, its is believed that the agreement was reached several months ago.

Tortorella, who won a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the spring of 2004, took over as coach when Tom Renney was dismissed in late February 2009.

The notoriously feisty bench boss served a one-game suspension for squirting and throwing water bottle at a fan in Washington during the club's Eastern quarterfinal series two years ago -- a matchup which saw the Blueshirts fail to hold a 3-1 series edge and lose in seven games.

In 2010, the Rangers were eliminated from postseason contention on the season's final day in a 2-1 shootout loss at Philadelphia.

Tortorella, whose contract was set to expire at the end of the current season, has a 94-73-18 record with New York.
