This week we’re evaluating the best and worst top 10 picks in a 10-year span from 1999-2008. We capped this at 2008 because it’s unfair to judge first- or second-year players. Today, the pick one success.
NFL Draft successes and busts 10-year evaluation: 1st overall success
Pick: One overall
The player: Michael Vick | Quarterback | Atlanta Falcons (2001)
When you look at the No. 1 picks in this 10-year period, there really aren't any who are truly elite players.
A strong argument could probably be made for Eli Manning and Carson Palmer, but at no point has either been considered one of the top one or two players at their position. End Mario Williams has had a few good years, but only one truly great season for the Texans.
That's why the pick for me is Michael Vick. In regard to honors, he's made more Pro Bowls than Manning and Palmer combined.
While Vick’s off-field actions are beyond deplorable, he’s a sensation on the field and one of the top draws in the league. It’s not because he’s a technically proficient quarterback. It’s because of the impact he’s had on the NFL. If there’s one thing we can say during the lockout, it’s that the NFL is a business. For the Atlanta Falcons (and now the
), Vick is good for business.
