Just a few hours after blowing out the Twins, 15-3, the Rays swept their day-night doubleheader with a 6-1 victory.
Rays Sweep Twins Behind Jeff Niemann, 6-1
Tampa Bay starter Jeff Niemann, who entered his fifth start of the season with a 7.08 ERA, carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but gave up two hits and one run in that frame and the bullpen took care of the last two innings.
The Rays jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Ben Zobrist’s two-run homer, which gave him 10 RBI in the doubleheader. John Jaso made it 3-0 in the fourth with a solo shot, and he added an RBI double in the Rays’ two-run sixth. The Rays scored their sixth run in the top of the eighth when Sean Rodriguez singled home Zobrist, who had doubled.
Niemann’s no-hit bid was stopped by Denard Span, who led off the seventh with a soft single into left field, and would score the Twins’ only run on Justin Morneau’s RBI single.
Anthony Swarzak, called up from triple-A to start for the Twins, gave up five runs in 5-1/3 innings.
