Orioles starter Brian Matusz has had an irritating month. First, he had a wart removed from his finger. Next, he was hit in the biceps by a line drive comebacker in a simulated game. And finally, he was scratched from making his first start of the season on Saturday with upper back soreness that has turned out to be an intercostal strain, affecting a muscle in the ribcage. Matusz has thus been placed on the disabled list, and is expected to be out for 3-6 weeks.
Brian Matusz On DL For 3-6 Weeks With Rib Injury
Matusz showed up on Friday experiencing pretty severe pain, and was sent for an MRI that revealed the injury. It isn’t going to end his season, but it’s a major setback, and it will have to be monitored and handled carefully so that Matusz doesn’t experience an aggravation later on. Injuries like this can be tricky for pitchers.
The 24-year-old Matusz came on strong in the second half of 2010 and was being looked at as perhaps the Orioles’ best starter. While he’s out, he’ll be replaced in the rotation by the 23-year-old Zach Britton, considered one of the better pitching prospects in baseball.
