Salt Lake Tribune writer Drew Jay noted that BYU assistant coach Tim LaComb also broke the news of Fredette winning the Naismith Award on Twitter:
Congrats Jimmer.....Naismith Award winner 2011
Fredette averaged 28.8 points per game, leading the nation, while helping BYU to one of its best-ever seasons. The Cougars earned a share of the Mountain West Conference's regular season championship despite losing big man Brandon Davies late in the year following an honor code violation, then beat San Diego State in the Mountain West Tournament.
Fredette then keyed BYU’s run to the Sweet 16 — its first such trip since 1981 — before failing to lift the Cougars past Florida.
Fredette beat out Connecticut's Kemba Walker, Duke's Nolan Smith, and Ohio State's Jared Sullinger, all previously Naismith Award finalists, for the award.
