The Philadelphia 76ers have gotten a major bounce-back season from Elton Brand as they push for the NBA Playoffs, but Brand's production dipped considerably in March. Now, we know why. Brand has apparently been playing through a fractured left hand, according to Jonathan Abrams of the New York Times.
Elton Brand Playing Through Fractured Hand Injury, According To Report
Sixers team president Rod Thorn confirmed that Brand is playing through the injury and that it is still bothering him.
"It still bothers him," Rod Thorn, Philadelphia's president, said in a telephone call Monday night. "He's had trouble for the last month trying to catch balls. There's no complaints about it from him. He keeps playing. His confidence, his leadership, have been invaluable to our team."
Brand suffered a broken pinky on February 27, then fractured his hand 10 days later, according to Abrams. The team did not disclose the injury because they were worried opponents would target Brand because of it.
Brand is averaging 14.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season, leading the 76ers to a 40-37 record despite starting 3-13. They are currently in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, just ahead of the 38-38 Knicks. Thorn said the team would only consider sitting Brand if its playoff seeding is locked in.
