In terms of the game result, Tuesday turned out to be a good day for the Cubs. But, in classic Cubs fashion, the good feelings are tempered a little bit by a reverse silver lining.
Diamondbacks Vs. Cubs: Andrew Cashner Hurt, But Chicago Hangs On
After blowing a three-run seventh inning lead, the Cubs re-captured the advantage and held on to defeat the Diamondbacks 6-5 in a game that saw starting pitcher Andrew Cashner depart with shoulder tightness.
Cashner had been on a roll when he had to come out in the top of the sixth, with Jeff Samardzija relieving him out of the bullpen. And it was Samardzija and Marcos Mateo who, in the top of the seventh, combined to allow the visitors to erase a three-run deficit, with the key hit being a two-run single up the middle by Willie Bloomquist.
But the Cubs struck back in the bottom half, with Marlon Byrd delivering an RBI double and Tyler Colvin later drawing a bases-loaded walk to add some insurance. That insurance turned out to be critical, as the Diamondbacks pushed one across in the ninth before Sean Marshall whiffed Bloomquist to end it. The tying run was left stranded on second.
In addition to his walk, Colvin earlier drilled a two-run homer off Barry Enright. Byrd had three hits, while no Diamondbacks player had more than one.
The series concludes Wednesday, with Armando Galarraga and Ryan Dempster.
