Josh Beckett was completely adequate in his first start of the season, but the Boston Red Sox could manage just one run against Cleveland Indians starter Josh Tomlin in a 3-1 loss. Beckett gave up three earned over five innings, struggling with his pitch count (which topped out at 106). But regardless of his performance, the Red Sox offense was unable to create anything against Tomlin, who scattered three hits in his seven innings.

If there's one thing really scary about this loss, it's that there's just not a lot of mitigating circumstances. It wasn't a matter of crazy fly balls in Texas, or a slow start from a guy like Jon Lester, or Daniel Bard exploding. The Sox, from man number one to man number twenty-five, were outplayed. And by the Cleveland Indians.
The Red Sox’ next chance for their first win comes on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. ET against the Indians. Daisuke Matsuzaka will go against Mitch Talbot.
