Women’s Ski Jumping, Ski Half-Pipe Among Six New Events Added For 2014 Winter Olympics

The International Olympic Committee announced on Wednesday that the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, will feature six new events, including women’s ski jumping, a sport that was previously rejected due to a low number of athletes.

The announcement was reason for celebration for the chairman of Ski Jumping Canada. "It's fantastic, just fantastic ... " said Brent Morrice. "We will be going for gold in 2014."

In addition to women’s ski jumping, the IOC approved the inclusion of ski half-pipe (both men and women, brah), biathlon mixed relay, figure skating team event and luge team relay.

Men’s and women’s snowboard slopestyle and men’s and women’s ski slopestyle were among other sports up for consideration, but ultimately were not added (yet); they will continue to be monitored by the IOC.

“This is a great day,” Christophe Dubi, the IOC’s sports director, said. “A decision will be made in the coming month [regarding slopestyle] after further feasibility study. We need our experts to review the situation with the organizing committee, FIS as well, prior to making a final decision.” Dubi confirmed that a decision on slopestyle is expected in a “matter of weeks.”

The XXII Olympic Winter Games will be held in Sochi, a resort town in Russia, from Feb. 7-23, 2014.
